Sigma Design has collaborated with a heavy industrial fabrication and machine shop seeking an experienced Tool & Die Machinist I to join their facility in Beaverton, OR. This company is one of the largest machine shops on the west coast. They have a long history of offering a wide range of equipment and services. Their products are used in a variety of industries, including mining, steel mills, power generation, cement, pulp, and paper.

  • Monday – Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm
  • $66,500 - $74,800 annually

Primary Function:
The Tool & Die Machinist I supports manufacturing by producing, modifying, and maintaining precision tooling and fixtures used in production. This role interprets technical drawings and specifications to machine components, ensure tooling performs to required tolerances, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts. The position works hands-on with both manual and CNC equipment while collaborating with engineering and production teams to deliver reliable, high-quality tooling solutions.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC equipment such as mills, lathes, and grinders to manufacture and repair tooling
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and work instructions to build or modify dies, fixtures, gauges, and related components
  • Plan machining approaches, calculate dimensions, and lay out materials for fabrication
  • Measure, mark, and prepare raw stock for machining processes
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair tooling to support ongoing production needs
  • Inspect completed parts to confirm compliance with specifications and tight tolerances
  • Create simple tooling solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency
  • Partner with engineers to refine designs and implement tooling enhancements
  • Assemble and connect pneumatic elements used in fixturing applications
  • Use precision measuring instruments and standard shop tools to perform work accurately
  • Provide project support as needed, including coordinating tasks and timelines
  • Train and mentor junior team members or apprentices on equipment and processes

Education and Experience: (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
  • Minimum of 2 years of years of hands-on experience in toolmaking, machining, or a similar manufacturing environment, or an equivalent mix of education and experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or trade school training in machining or a related field preferred
  • Solid understanding of tool construction methods, shop math, GD&T principles, and material characteristics.
  • Demonstrated ability to machine to very tight tolerances (approximately ±0.0002”).
  • Experience with CNC programming and operation required.
  • Familiarity with CAM software and general computer applications used in manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of machining workflows, layout techniques, and assembly practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • ITAR - Permanent resident of the United States (“U.S. person” as defined by ITAR)
  • Background and drug screen - pass a post-offer background verification and drug screen.

Work Environment
Standard machine shop environment with various types of machinery. Appropriate safety garments (PPE) must be worn. Must be able to stand and work as long as 12 hours in different positions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
